Shaping futures beyond the game: Co-ops support youth with scholarships to top basketball camps
From on-court instruction to campus life, 50 rising sixth and seventh graders got a firsthand look at college this summer — including the opportunity to learn alongside two of the nation’s top basketball programs, thanks to North Carolina’s electric cooperatives.
Through the sports camp program, participating electric co-ops send one young woman to the Wolfpack Women’s Basketball Camp and one young man to the Carolina Basketball School each year.

The scholarships cover all expenses at the overnight camps, giving students the chance to stay in dorms, build their skills and learn from Division I coaches and players through individual and group instruction. Winners are selected by their local electric cooperative for their exceptional work both in the classroom and in their communities.
Whitney Smith, whose son Mason was selected by Pee Dee Electric to attend the Carolina Basketball School hosted by the University of North Carolina, said the camp was an opportunity for her son to grow as a player.
“This opportunity will help him grow by experiencing different coaching styles and playing with different kids,” said Smith. “This was a great opportunity for him to see the importance of still putting in the work and making a name for yourself with coaches who have never seen your game.”
Since its launch more than two decades ago, the program has given hundreds of North Carolina students the chance to learn and play alongside top-tier athletes and coaches — all while reinforcing the importance of education and leadership in their communities.
“Investing in our youth through programs like the summer sports camps is one of the most meaningful ways we can support the future of our communities,” said Jeremy Dewberry, vice president of communications and member services at for Pee Dee Electric. “These camps give young athletes more than just skills on the court. They build character, confidence and connections that last far beyond the summer.”

Scholarship applications open in January each year, with a March 31 deadline to apply. To be eligible, students must be rising sixth or seventh graders at a qualifying school in North Carolina. Applications are reviewed by each local electric cooperative and assessed using a variety of criteria — including academics, extracurricular activities and an essay.
“Thank you, Pee Dee Electric, for offering such an amazing opportunity for our youth,” said Smith. “Many of these kids wouldn’t get to experience such prestigious camps without these scholarships. You are helping kids develop and grow their game while also creating memories that will follow them forever.”
