NC’s electric co-ops giving students opportunity to score big with scholarships to top basketball camps

This summer, more than 50 middle school students from across North Carolina will hit the court alongside current and former college athletes, thanks to scholarships provided by North Carolina’s electric cooperatives.
Not only do these students get a sneak peek into the day in the life of a Division 1 athlete and college student, but they also get to learn from learn from two premier basketball programs – UNC men’s basketball and NC State women’s basketball.
The scholarships cover all expenses – from meals to lodging to all-day fun – at the overnight camps in June. Beyond this one-of-a-kind experience, campers will benefit from individual and group coaching led by Division I players and coaches, honing their basketball techniques and teamwork skills.
Each year, 25 of North Carolina’s electric cooperatives award these scholarships to students who are not only making an impact on the court, but also in their classroom and communities.
“The basketball camp was a wonderful experience for my daughter, giving her a glimpse at what she can achieve in the future if she continues to work hard for her dreams,” said Emily Williams, parent of a 2024 camp scholarship winner from Surry-Yadkin EMC and teacher at Yadkin Early College High School. “I am so thankful as a parent and an educator that the cooperatives afforded her this amazing opportunity. It was an experience that she will never forget.”
Wes Moore, coach of the Wolfpack women’s basketball team, and Hubert Davis, coach of the Tar Heel men’s basketball team will direct the camps with the help of staff and players.
“Over the years in coaching and watching talent develop, I have found that athletic skill and potential are not bound by where you live, where you go to school, or your background,” said Coach Moore. “Because of this partnership with North Carolina’s electric cooperatives, we can help kids from all over the state attend our camp and discover their true potential on and off the court.”
This summer marks the 22nd year that North Carolina’s electric cooperatives will award basketball camp scholarships to middle school students across the state. The program has helped students discover opportunities beyond the court, including an early look at what college has to offer.
The Wolfpack Women’s Basketball Camp will be held June 15-18 at NC State, and the Men’s Carolina Basketball School will occur June 25-28 at UNC.
Applications are now open and will close on March 31st.
To be eligible, students must be a rising sixth or seventh grader at a qualifying school in North Carolina during the 2025-26 school year. To learn more about the basketball camp scholarship program and apply, visit https://www.ncelectriccooperatives.com/community/sports-camps/.
