As Winter Arrives, Stay Safe and Warm: Touchstone Energy Tips In Both English and Spanish

November 30, 2005

Raleigh, N.C. —As the state’s Hispanic population continues to grow, North Carolina’s Touchstone Energy cooperatives have expanded their safety communications programs to reach Hispanic audiences.  Many Hispanic immigrants to North Carolina have chosen to live, work and raise their families in rural areas served by the state’s 27 electric cooperatives.

Oftentimes, new Spanish-speaking immigrants are not familiar with electric safety.  This unfamiliarity is caused by a number of reasons, but two of the most prevalent causes are a previous lack of consistent electric service and moving from regions with limited climate variety.  Therefore, communicating safety procedures to Hispanic communities is especially critical during winter months.

To ensure that Spanish-speaking immigrants fully understand the dangers of electricity, North Carolina’s Touchstone Energy cooperatives have worked with several community organizations to produce Spanish-language safety messages.  Bilingual reading materials and public service announcements recorded in Spanish are some of the things North Carolina’s electric cooperatives have done to reach out to the growing Hispanic populations and share with them important safety messages.

Electricity is a vital resource that everyone in North Carolina depends on daily, but when used unsafely, the consequences can be costly and deadly.  According to the North Carolina Department of Insurance, 3,250 electrical source fires caused $25.3 million in damages in the state during 2004.

Many of these accidents caused injuries and even death, and most of them were preventable.  To help reduce electric safety casualties and injuries, North Carolina’s Touchstone Energy cooperatives offer these safety tips to all consumers to help weather the coming winter months.
