Touchstone Energy scholarship recipients honored at Wolfpack Women’s basketball game

Raleigh, N.C. —Nineteen young ladies were honored for receiving a Touchstone Energy Sports Camp scholarship from North Carolina’s electric cooperatives during a special halftime presentation at a North Carolina State University women’s basketball game. The basketball camp scholarship winners traveled to Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh from across the state to watch the Wolfpack take on Wake Forest University on Feb. 3.

Twenty-six middle-school girls were selected out of numerous applicants to attend the Kellie Harper Wolfpack Basketball Academy at N.C. State last June on all-expense paid scholarships from North Carolina’s Touchstone Energy cooperatives. Nineteen scholarship winners and their guests attended the reunion event.

The scholarship winners and their guests received tickets to the game and enjoyed a catered lunch. At halftime, the young women were recognized on the court, receiving a certificate of achievement from Lindsey Listrom, coordinator of the Touchstone Energy Sports Camp scholarship program. A check $14,600 from Touchstone Energy was presented in support of the scholarships.

“We commend these young ladies for being outstanding scholars, community members and athletes, and we are proud to honor their achievements as Touchstone Energy Sports Camp scholarship winners during the special halftime presentation,” Listrom said. “It is a joy to award scholarships to young athletes year after year, and we are proud to provide middle-school students the opportunity to develop new skills by working with collegiate athletes and coaches through the Touchstone Energy Sports Camp scholarship program.”

North Carolina’s electric cooperatives are accepting applications for the 2013 Touchstone Energy Sports Camp scholarships through March 30. Statewide, the scholarships will send 26 young women in sixth through eighth grades to the Kellie Harper Basketball Camp at N.C. State and 26 young men in sixth through eighth grades to the Roy Williams Basketball Camp at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Applicants are judged on their application, essay and extracurricular activities.
