Ophelia Updates – Saturday, Sept. 23 – NC Electric Cooperatives

After reaching a peak of approximately 20,000 outages at this morning, power continues to be restored to members across our state thanks to our co-ops crews.

Update: 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23

Ophelia has continued to weaken but remains a tropical storm as it nears the Virginia border. While power has been restored for many, storm conditions are impeding restoration in some areas. Cooperative crews are working as quickly and safely as possible to restore power.

  • As of 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, approximately 4,500 North Carolina cooperative members are without power, down from a peak of approximately 20,000 outages this morning. 
  • As the storm passes and conditions improve, please remember that power restoration is still ongoing – stay far away from downed or sagging power lines and report them to your cooperative.

Update: 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23

Ophelia remains a tropical storm as it moves across eastern North Carolina, with impacts being felt beyond the center of the storm. Cooperative crews have worked throughout the night and day to restore early outages and progress continues even as new outages arise due to storm conditions. 

  • As of 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, approximately 16,000 North Carolina cooperative members are without power.
  • Crews are working as quickly and safely as possible to restore power.
  • Cooperation among cooperatives in effect, with crews from unaffected areas being mobilized to assist with power restoration in harder hit areas.

Update: 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23

Ophelia made landfall near Emerald Isle this morning as a tropical storm with near hurricane force winds. Cooperative crews have worked throughout the night to restore early outages and progress continues this morning.

  • As of 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, approximately 14,800 North Carolina cooperative members are without power.
  • Ophelia is expected to remain a tropical storm as it treks across eastern North Carolina today. Additional outages could occur from strong winds and downed trees and limbs due to significant rainfall and saturated grounds. 
  • Cooperative crews across the impacted areas will tackle outages as soon as conditions are safe.
