North Carolina’s Touchstone Energy cooperatives award 56 students scholarships to basketball camps at state universities

RALEIGH, N.C. – Fifty-six middle-school students who earned Touchstone Energy Sports Camp scholarships are lacing up their sneakers to attend basketball camps at two of the state’s largest universities.

Young women will take to the court June 23-26 at the Wolfpack Women’s Basketball Camp at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. Young men will travel to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for the Roy Williams Carolina Basketball Camp June 21-25.

“This is the 11th year North Carolina’s Touchstone Energy cooperatives have sent exceptional youth from across the state to experience life on a college campus and work with collegiate coaches and student-athletes,” said Lindsey Listrom, a coordinator for the Touchstone Energy Sports Camp Scholarship program. “It’s an honor to provide this exciting learning opportunity to outstanding middle-school students each year.”

Scholarship recipients were selected based on their scholastic and extracurricular activities and an essay that accompanied the application. More than 200 students applied for the scholarships statewide.

Conducting the Wolfpack Women’s Basketball Camp are Coach Wes Moore, his staff and members of the Wolfpack women’s basketball team. Roy Williams, coach of the 2005 and 2009 National Champion Tar Heels, his staff, and current and former Tar Heel players will teach the Roy Williams Basketball Camp. Both camps will work closely with each camper to foster the development of fundamental skills that will help the young athletes perform and excel both on and off the court.

The co-ops’ partnership with universities and coaches provides a unique educational and athletic opportunity for our state’s youth and keeps with Touchstone Energy’s core values of accountability, integrity, innovation and commitment to community. North Carolina’s Touchstone Energy cooperatives are part of a national alliance of 750 consumer-owned electric cooperatives in 46 states that provide high standards of service to customers large and small.
