CHEC Makes Progress on Bonner Bridge Transmission Project
Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative (CHEC) and contract crews New River Electrical and South Wire have begun work to install transmission cables on the new Bonner Bridge over Oregon Inlet. The 1000-kcmil, 115-kV transmission line will span 2.8 miles in fiberglass conduit held in place on the bridge by a hanger system.
The system includes four splice boxes, necessitating 20 cable runs and 24 splices and terminations throughout the project. The new cable system will include a spare, improving reliability for Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands.
Contract crew Lee Electrical Construction will assist with ancillary overhead transmission relocations related to the project. The installation is expected to be complete in January 2019.
