Flowers are blooming on a seeded acre underneath transmission lines near the North Carolina Electric Membership Corporation’s (NCEMC) Hamlet power plant. The site is officially a part of the Butterfly Highway initiative of the North Carolina Wildlife Federation, which supports natural pollinators including bees, birds and butterflies with pollinator-friendly plants native to the state.
Last week Angel Hjarding, the federation’s director of pollinator and wildlife habitat programs, visited the plant to observe the blooms in action and present a Butterfly Highway sign to NCEMC staff.
The project was featured in the January issue of Carolina Country and more information is also available through the North Carolina Wildlife Federation at butterflyhighway.org.
